Pennyroyal Cafe & Provisions | Restaurant Review
June 13, 2024
It is tough to come by a restaurant that celebrates refined americana cuisine with unique local produce without a price tag that makes you cringe. In a time where the restaurant scene often feels gimmicky and unoriginal, Pennyroyal Cafe & Provisions' menu feels authentic and native.
Even with a sophisticated menu, the locale is laid back. Tables are limited, so make sure to make a reservation in the courtyard for sunset. Arrive to your reservation a few minutes early to grab a drink at the bar set inside a barn with an order window. Your drink will no doubt be beautifully adorned with edible flowers.
The menu specializes in herbs and produce that is often overlooked or tired, but when prepared thoughtfully by Chef Mindy, it feels inventive and new. Add in local stars such as ramps, whitefish, walleye, and trout, and you’ll be tempted to try the whole menu.
To start, the tomato fennel soup was sizable and rich. The local asparagus paired with a romesco sauce and soft-boiled eggs was a memorable and unique combination. Even with such delectable starts, the mains were haunting. We ordered the duck leg confit with rhubarb chutney, fennel, ramps, and polenta. Additionally, we ordered the flat iron steak with asparagus, sauteed onion, and an unconventional au poivre sauce with capers.
