Drinking Through Buenos Aires
Trying the 3 Bars that Made the World's 50 Best List 2024
June 13, 2024
While wine may be the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of the drinking culture in Argentina, the capital city of Buenos Aires is also known for its classy and innovative cocktail scene. During my week in the city, I gladly sampled cocktails from the 3 bars that made the 50 Best List and others mentioned on the 50 Best’s Discovery List to see what the fuss was about. Surprisingly, Argentina’s cocktail scene proved to be the most innovative and exciting dining experience I’ve had in a long time.
50 Best List
#11 Tres Monos
Tres Monos is the least pretentious spot of the three, but the cocktail list packs a punch. Martini Criollo with its tomato and pickled onion notes is particularly interesting, but the entire cocktail list is inspired and innovative.
#26 CoChinChina
My favorite on the list, CoChinChina is a Viet-themed bar that doesn’t lose its Argentine charm. If you’re into savory drinks, order the Umami Martini (off the menu– by far one of the most unique cocktails I’ve ever had. The large bar is the centerpiece of the room and the bar has indoor and outdoor seating.
#30 Florería Atlántico
You have to ring the doorbell for this speakeasy-style lounge. Upon entry, you’ll walk through a flower shop before being led to the basement where a long bar awaits. The lounge is very nautical and each of the cocktails will have you sailing to different country-inspired drinks.
Notable Others
If you’re interested in exploring more of the fantastic bars in Buenos Aires and you love a nice cocktail in a beautiful setting, check out these spots:
Niño Gordo
Niño Gordo is #43 on the 50 Best Restaurants in Latin America List. You’ll most likely be going for the beloved Katsusando, but don’t overlook the cocktail menu that features drinks with wasabi, cilantro & kimchi bloody mary’s, and curry daiquiris. The decor is playful and lit by their signature red ambient lighting.
Casa Cavia
If you want to impress a date, Casa Cavia is the place to go. The tranquil courtyard is a perfect place to grab a sophisticated cocktail while you watch birds splash in the fountain.
Verne Club
The Verne Club is such a dark romantic setting you’ll want to find someone to snuggle up with. Named after the Eiffel Tower restaurant Jules Verne, this lounge has a Parisian atmosphere without feeling gimmicky. You’ll find the lounge through a nondescript doorway and you’ll need to ring the doorbell to be let in. Their martinis are top-notch.
Alvear Palace
The Alvear Palace is a cultural institution in Buenos Aires. The Palace is known as one of the most historically luxurious hotels in the world. A trip to the city is not complete without a drink in the lobby bar or the rooftop terrace.
Backdoor
Not the best cocktails in the city, but the bar is set in a cozy candlelit bookstore!
Honorable Mentions
Other honorable mentions include Gran Bar Danzon & Boticario.
